Spring Clean the City is an all volunteer event to clean the 'World's most livable city' and highlight the problem of single use 'disposable' plastic drink related litter. This type of litter makes up a large portion of plastic litter that end up in our waterways, our bays and oceans. They are harmful to wildlife and spoil the look of the city and environment.
On Saturday, the 15th of September, hundreds of volunteers from BeachPatrol, Love Our Street and many other like-minded organisations will meet up on Southbank to fan out and do a massive spring clean of the CBD streets, laneways, parks and river banks. We will assign teams, provide maps and litter bags. Please bring your own gloves and picker-uppers!
Let's show city goers that people from all over the city care about the state of our streets and waterways and will inspire them to help improve their environment and lobby for change. Picture hundreds of us all in our colourful group tee shirts walking around the city, BeachPatrol bags in hand picking up the litter and recording it.
Bottles and cans collected will be counted, presented and photographed to demonstrate the real need for a Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria in the lead up to the state election. Victoria is the only mainland state to not have one. It is not good enough. We will show this is needed for Victoria, too, by visually presenting how much of the CBD's litter is comprised of drink-related items.
Media will be there to cover the event and to witness the collected litter at the end, culminating in a big colourful group photo with the CBD in the background.
